Nokia (Q2 2018)

On Thursday, Nokia reported a second quarter net sales figure of €5.3 billion—a small setback compared to the €5.6 billion from the same period last year.

However, the company cited a slightly stronger diluted earnings per share report, calculated at negative €0.05 for this year, compared to the negative €0.07 for Q2 2017.

The company’s net income for Q2 2018 came €2 billion short due to paid dividends and employee incentives for the company’s business performance in 2017.

In the report, the mobile communications giant stated that about 40% of their sales pipeline is geared towards “solutions, products and services from multiple businesses” and that it expects to roll out its commercial 5G network at the end of 2018.

American Airlines (Q2 2018)

Despite strong travel demand this year, the popular US airline reported $11.64 billion in revenue (4% growth compared to 2017)—just shy of meeting Wall Street expectations of $11.7 billion.

The main culprit behind the company’s slightly disappointing performance was the surging cost of fuel (over 41%) during the second quarter of 2018. Another reason was the cancellation of over 2,000 flights in June due to computer-related issues.

As a result, the world’s largest airline by traffic is already re-calibrating its growth plan for the second half of 2018, with EPS expectations ranging between $4.50 and $5 per share.

Advanced Micro Devices (Q2 2018)

After seven consecutive years of bad luck, AMD’s second quarter report revealed that the company is more than capable of taking the fight back to its competitors. On Wednesday, the processor and graphics chip manufacturer reported a 53% surge in revenue, reaching $1.8 billion.

The adjusted EPS also came at 14 cents—a complete turnaround considering the company’s EPS for last year sat at negative 1 cent. Happy with the news, investors were quick to then hike AMD’s shares by another 14% on Thursday to a price of $18.45—the highest number since the start of 2007, and much higher than the $2 per share for February 2016.

According to AMD, it’s performance remained unaffected by the declining demand in graphics cards, which were a highly sought-after commodity for currency miners.

This was possible thanks to strong sales of AMD’s newest chips for server systems (Epyc), as well as the release of their second generation Ryzen processors.

Looking forward, AMD president and CEO Dr. Lisa Su stated that she expects the company to be even more competitive in 2019 as it moves to a new 7-nanometer chip manufacturing process.

“We had an outstanding second quarter with strong revenue growth, margin expansion and our highest quarterly net income in seven years,” said Su.

“Most importantly, we believe our long – term technology bets position us very well for the future. We are confident that with the continued execution of our product roadmaps, we are on an excellent trajectory to drive market share gains and profitable growth.”
